Prom Updo Hairstyles

Updos for proms are a tricky affair, especially if you intend to have some fun on the dance floor. Most updos do not resist any heavy dancing and may ruin the fun of that special night. So, if you do not have the patience to do the updo well, you might be better off with a sexy down style. For the prom (or for any other event for that matter), an updo has to be made with certain precautions. Firstly, the hair should not be washed the day of the event. Under the effect of shampoos and conditioners, the hair becomes slippery and the updo will not last very long. Secondly, you should not hesitate in using as many hairpins as possible to hold the updo in place during all the wild activity of prom night. Some great prom updo ideas are described below.

Edgy Pony Updo

This is a great and unusual hairstyle that descends to us from the Gods of high fashion in Europe. If you want to stand out during your prom night then this is the right thing for you. The hair is worn into a bun which is tied at the crown. The ponytail does not fall off at the back. Rather, it is made to fall towards the front. Follow these easy steps:

  • Brush the hair until it is smooth.
  • Blend in some styling cream to hold the strands in place.
  • More styling cream should be applied to the crown to make sure that the ponytail remains in place for some time at least.
  • Brush the hair from the front of your head towards a single point at the top of the crown. Make the hair merge into a single tail. Hold this tail in place, and smooth the hair on the crown.
  • Tie down the tail with an elastic band.
  • Add bobby pins above and below the elastic to secure the hair.
  • Separate the tail into two and wrap one strand around the base of the tail to give it a thick base.
  • Brush the tail until smooth and pull it towards the front of the head. Secure with pins.

Quick Messy Updo

This is a real easy one for a prom night, particularly if you haven’t had much time to prepare. The point about being “messy” is that you really can do anything you want with the hair! It’ll still look nice. Better still, anyone can have a messy updo, whatever their hair length (well, they can get some help in the form of instant clip-ons or temporary hair extensions…). Here is how it goes:

  • Detangle the hair strands using a detangler. Part the hair as you wish (front, side, high or low).
  • Stir in a styling cream or mousse (use defrisant if your hair is wavy).
  • Blow dry and brush towards the back of the head with a large flat paddle brush.
  • Back comb the crown for more volume.
  • Position the ponytail below the crown and tie with elastic band.
  • Take the bottom of the tail and wrap around the base until all hair is used up.
  • Loosen the hair with fingers to give it a messy appearance.
