Updo Hairstyles

Formal Updo Hairstyles

Whenever we are required to attend special occasions like weddings, business parties and other social functions, we would probably need a formal hairstyle. An updo looks always great in formal occasions like these. By brushing the hair towards the back or top of the head, the neck appears elongated, and the feminine shoulders are brought into view. Updos also enable women to bring attention to their jewelry (necklaces and earrings). In brief, the updo hairstyle enables the woman to show off her beauty, which are what social events are all about in the end (for her anyway). Some variants of the classic formal updo are described below.

With Bangs

Women often like to have some hair falling over their face, even with an updo. This helps them hide imperfections such as a high forehead or blemishes. After the updo is set, you can just have part of your hair slant across the forehead.

Curly Updos

These can be a trifle complicated but may be worth the effort. It may simpler with simple curled strands where you take a few strands of hair off the updo and curl them up with a curler. Curly updos involve curling all of your hair and then proceeding to do the updo. This type of updo looks wonderful on women who have naturally wavy hair.

Half Updos

Half updos are a nice midway solution to hair worn down and updos. Rather than opening the face completely with a traditional updo, the half updo gives a more appealing hairdo. This style has been promulgated by many movie and catwalk stars including Nicole Kidman and Donna Karan. Half updos are of different types, because they are so easily adapted to every type of face. They are especially nice for women who feel that updos make them look too tight or too formal. Half updos lighten up the atmosphere a little. So, it can be called semi-formal. Some half updo ideas are:

  • Hair tied just below the high volume crown with locks allowed to flow through. Swept bangs and wavy locks frame the face quite nicely.
  • Side swept bangs covering the forehead with little curls at the end. Long locks falling to the shoulders are wavy. Hair is pinned down just a little bit below the crown with some tendrils hanging out.
  • Hair is tied at the top of the crown with messy locks at the back

Soft and Seductive Styles

Some great updo styles have been promoted by movie stars like Angelina Jolie. They are thus suitable for women with oblong, heart-shaped, square, diamond or oval face shapes. With soft and seductive updos, the height and volume of the crown is accentuated. Select pieces of hair are allowed loose so as to compliment the face. Here is how it’s done:

  • Wash and dry the hair.
  • Put in some mousse, using the fingers.
  • Using a small round brush, tease the hair for volume.
  • When the hair is dry, use a barreled curling iron to create waves around the head.
  • Starting on the sides of the head pin the hair up and secure them at the back of the crown.
  • Remove a few tendrils of hair to frame the face.
  • Hairspray generously.
