An Introduction to Updo Hairstyles
Updos are a wonderful invention of female cosmetology! Never has a
woman looked more beautiful than with a well done updo hairstyle. Updos
are always in fashion, whatever the age, or time of year. Movie Stars of
every make and rank use up dos to accentuate their every appearance. How
can one forget the beautiful Jessica Alba in her wonderful updo or
Nicole Kidman smiling in an updo hairstyle that most of us would envy to
the point of greenness? For those who do not know it (and if you really
need to define it), an updo is a way to style the hair in such a way
that most or all of it is tied to the back of the head.
 Updos have
many advantages:
- In summer, they keep the hair out of the face and lets the air
in
- They are useful when we do not want messy hair in the way for
example during housework or shopping.
- They accentuate our face and neck, bringing more attention to
our assets…
- They are simple to do (in most cases).
- They are suitable for most occasions, be it weddings, prom
nights or even funerals (without flashy accessories, of course)
- They look good on all types and lengths of hair; although the
longer the hair the more scope is there to do something wonderful
with it.
- There are different variations of updos so you are certain to
find one to suit your personal style.
- Updos can be modified to suit particular face types
There are several types of updos, including:
- The side bun—where the hair is arranged into a ponytail
twisted to one side of the head. It is usually tied using an
elastic band and secured with bobby pins. It may be braided as
well.
- The double ponytail—the hair is separated in a top side and
a bottom side; ponytails are made of each. They are then
combined to form a bigger ponytail which tied up into a bun
using bobby pins.
- Four Strand Braids—pull the hair to have a high
ponytail. Separate it into two and then four parts. Hold two in
each hand. Have the far right strand twist around the middle
right one and the far left one twist around the middle left one.
Then take the new middle left and twist around the new middle
right. Continue until the end of your hair is reached. Bun up
and tie down.
- Half Updos—these have tresses that are worn up at the sides
and crown and hair that is worn down as from the middle of the
scalp. This allows the hair to flow down past the shoulders
(depending on length) giving a sultry look (sexy and exciting!).

Updos do not necessarily require the input of a hairstylist.
Most of the updo styles can be done at home by oneself. But, if
you need more elaborate results like for example for a special
event, the hairstylist might do a better job.
